Field Research (Workplace Interview) Report:

Name of person you interviewed/listened to:

Robyn Baker-Wright

Position: People and cultural manager

Organisation: SSKB

Workplace Reflection:

The workplace interview was conducted with Robyn Baker-Wright who works for SSKB. Her positon within this small company is the ‘People and cultural manager’. Although she discussed that it is more of a generalized position as time has gone on; dealing with all HR aspects broadly, instead of specializing in certain areas. In the company there are two directors and one chief operating officer who she reports to.

Her role in the company is very strategic and operational. Through these managements she oversees: To name a few

  • Training development

  • Performance management

  • Workplace health and safety

  • Recruitment and retention

  • Attraction strategies

  • Social media (relates to cultural practices)

  • Event management

  • Industrial contracts

  • Working close with fair work acts and relation awards.

Some of her strategic planning consist of planning closely with each department about how many staff the need, at what time, for how long. Also ensuring the workplace is happy and healthy and everything runs smoothly.
Mrs Baker got this position through entering the field of travel, going onto being a flight attendant and studying a diploma of human resources and business studies and management part time. After flying and studying for eight years she landed a job at flight Centre which gave her the building blocks of work experience she needed. She stated that the work experience and knowledge she gained from working at flight centre helped her become more employable. Along with her studies she spent a lot of time gaining knowledge on her on feet by constantly researching organisation theories and facts about becoming a better employee to use and test in the workplace. She also researched and kept up to date with the competing organisations and what they were doing to be such a successful organisation and what the struggling organisations were doing wrong. This also helps with applying for the right company in the future.

From Mrs Bakers insight of her journey it has become clear how to be employable after graduation. Completing your studies at university is a huge MUST in her eyes but also researching and finding more knowledge on your own is the big difference between you and another candidate going for a job. For example, knowing about the competitions and company your applying for makes you more employable when the selection and interview period begins. University students have become more in tune and responsive to the high demand and needs of the employment system. Although the needs are often imprecise due to the uncontrollable uncertainties in the labour market. Traditional occupations and employment conditions are knowledge is decreasing which is why universities have become aware and are attending to these needs (Cai, Y. (2012). Gaining community experience with people is great on your resume, this could be in the air being a flight attendant or behind a register or even volunteering. This gives you the people skills and experience you need. After your studies landing a job with a credible organisation with high performance levels sets you on a great pathway of experience for future employees. To conclude, always be open to idea and keeping furthering your learning by reading and researching.
